Untapped is a design journal that looks back to look forward.
This edition is Print Edition 002 for 2024-2025.
Eleven essays and interviews comprise the second print edition, which features a mix of new and existing content. Stories include Philip Poon on seeing New York’s Chinatown as a readymade, Josh Itiola on how Nancy Holt’s 1980s “System Works” installations exposed our unconscious dependence on basic architectural frameworks, Anthony Paletta on W.G.Clark’s place-centric buildings, and Anne Quito on the still-growing bodies of work by American Studio Craft legends Wendy Maruyama and Tom Loeser. Other contributors include Anjulie Rao, Deb Chachra, Jarrett Fuller, Edwin Heathcote, Shane Reiner-Roth, and Alissa Walker.
Notably, Diana Budds explores the overlooked yet enduring relevance of the New York gallery a83, which, from 1978 to 1994, was the home of John Nichols Printmakers & Publishers (JNP&P). Working with architects such as Thom Mayne, Michael Graves, Elizabeth Diller, and Charles Moore, JNP&P’s prints shaped the visual communication of experimental architecture, and practitioners frequently visited its space to talk shop. JNP&P also worked with artists, including Laurie
Anderson and Joseph Beuys. Today, John Nichols’s son, Owen, and his partner, Clara Syme, who are both architects, continue JNP&P’s legacy through a83’s bold exhibitions and events.

Untapped believes that both the near and distant past hold valuable insights for architects and designers. People have already solved, or are making headway on, many of the challenges the industry currently faces—but such achievements are often overlooked among an excess of data or in the pursuit of innovation, or when they are presented in convoluted ways. These stories unpack and add a fresh critical perspective to those achievements, explaining why they’re significant and how they can be useful right now.
Untapped is not anti-innovation. They believe that the most efficient path to progress begins with building on what we know. This is the information that the journal is dedicated to gathering, making sense of, and reflecting on, and that we can’t afford to forget.
Collectively, Untapped’s stories form an encyclopedia of ideas: a gateway to knowledge that serves as a timeless, ever-growing resource for all.
ABOUT THE PUBLISHER
Untapped is an editorially independent initiative of the design company Henrybuilt. The journal does not feature any of its projects or products. Untapped’s focus—seeking to understand and leverage the best of the past to create a better future, a guiding principle of Henrybuilt—is what connects the two ventures.
