SENSORY JOURNAL 008: Matriarchy
•Posted on April 09 2024
In February this year, I received an email from my Representative Assembly member Josh Lowenthal's office accepting nominations for this year's Women of Distinction from the 69th Assembly District of California. I immdiately sent in a nomination for my Business Advisor turned friend, Kena Fuller of Fuller Management Corporation, for the endless and unwavering time and dedication she has shown to downtown Long Beach small businesses and entrepreneurs over the last couple of years.

When Lowenthal's office called me in March about the Women of Distinction awards, I was excited thinking they were calling to tell me Kena had been selected for the award. Kena was in fact selected, but they were calling to tell me that I had also been selected as a Woman of Distinction in the 69th Assembly District! Unbeknownst to me, my female small business peers from the East Village Arts District had nominated ME for this award as well.
I was entirely surprised, and very honored by this nomination and recognition, and what means more to me than receiving any award is that my female peers recognize and appreciate my efforts and love for our small business community and neighborhood. Women seeing and acknowledging women is such a beautiful thing! It was also incredibly inspiring to meet and hear the stories of other remarkable women putting community first here in Long Beach.
This award is just a moment in a constant series of meetings, gatherings, strategizing, and supporting that happens amongst the community of women that surround me. It's led me to think about what a Matriarchal society could look like for us while looking back in admiration for the many strong, barrier breaking women that came before us. So this Sensory Journal edition is dedicated to just that - to the Matriarchy.

I watched a couple new movies lately telling the stories of some incredible women from our recent History. Regina King plays Shirley Chisholm in the new movie Shirley on Netflix. If you've never heard of Shirley Chisholm, I highly recommend doing a deep dive on the first black woman elected to US Congress, first black candidate for a major-party nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's Presidential Nomination! I loved getting a closer look into her personal life story and connections through this movie, especially the story of Barbara Lee.

Another movie I loved was Nyad on Netflix starring Jodie Foster and Annette Bening. Annette plays Diana Nyad, the woman who in 2013 at age 64, swam the 110 miles from Cuba to Florida after 5 attempts with support from her friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster's character). This movie had me on the edge of my seat the entire film, and just represents the sheer determination and ability of women who set their mind to something and have other women to support them!
