SENSORY JOURNAL 001

I'm writing this on what feels like the first warm spring day we've really had here this year in the normally mild SoCal! What has been a long, dreary winter for us has led to a lot of introspection amongst all the hibernating. With all my time staying inside, I've found myself wanting to have more sensory experiences, flexing my brain in more interesting ways than our social media platforms can provide. Educational and creative intake of content found outside of our algorithms! And in my efforts to do so I subconsciously started making lists of all the things I've really been enjoying listening to, watching, tasting, reading, or otherwise experiencing.

And while I often have conversations in person with customers in the shop sharing resources and things we recommend to one another, I thought it might also be fun to bring that form of connection online to some of my customers who may be farther away. So the Sensory Journal is born! It will probably go out whenever the motivation strikes with a short list of things I've been enjoying or thinking about, and maybe you'll then want to enjoy them too (or send me some of your own recommendations and musings)! I love sharing good things with like-minded community, and so I hope you'll enjoy it as well!

I've really been feeling like our social media platforms are at their peak worst lately. It feels more draining and wasteful than ever and frustrating when my feeds don't represent the accounts I follow or the things I am interested in! This article from Wired does a great job of explaining how our most used platforms have shifted overtime and why it is that they are in the current state they are in (that really isn't serving anyone). After reading this and having a better understanding, it inspired me to start this newsletter! Check it out HERE if you've been feeling frustrated yourself with your platforms.

LISTEN:
My favorite music I listened to last month was the new album from the iconic blues singer Bonnie Raitt called, Just Like That. My mother listened to a lot of Bonnie growing up so her voice is like a warm blanket of nostalgia for me. She recently won a Grammy for song of the year from this new album, but the entire album is excellent. If you somehow haven't heard of her before now, I highly recommend deep diving her extensive discography! I recommend her self-titled debut album from 1971 which was recorded at an abandoned summer camp on Lake Minnetonka, and my favorite album of hers from 1991, Luck of the Draw.

WATCH
This one feels appropriate for International Women's Month. I saw Women Talking at our local Art Theatre last month, and was so moved by it! I felt like it truly encompassed the power that exists when a group of women are in a room together. So much of my life, especially as a small business owner, has been in rooms of women sharing resources, experiencing beautiful conversation, collaboration over competition, empathy over ego. There is so much strength in the gentle honesty of women, the ability and choice to intentionally listen, and to debate and negotiate with respect and consideration of others.
The true story this movie is based on is also pretty incredible, and the cast was excellent, so I highly recommend this movie! Watch the trailer HERE
